‘She is the Universe’ Launches Season 2 of Video Series, led by Award-Winning Dominican-American Filmmaker and Storyteller
SHE IS THE UNIVERSE IS A GLOBAL PLATFORM DESIGNED TO AMPLIFY THE VOICES OF TEENAGE GIRLS FROM AROUND THE WORLD.
PORTLAND, OR, October 7, 2019, Award-winning animator and filmmaker, Laura Peña, founder of She is the Universe, a global empowerment project for teenage girls, announces the release of video series’ second season that captures the diverse yet universal stories of teenage girls as part of her ongoing mission to inspire, empower, connect and uplift girls around the world, on International Day of the Girl 2019. The new episodes will be available at www.sheistheuniverse.org on International Day of the Girl, October 11, 2019, 11:11am PST.
She is the Universe began with the mission of amplifying the voices of 111 girls on six continents.
We know the power of a girl and her voice; we recognize the confidence that comes from a girl telling her story and believe in the power that her story can create in the lives of other girls watching her. We share these stories of girls speaking up and expressing who they are, to empower other girls to share their stories. Girls have many different challenges, strengths, interests, insecurities and dreams. They are resilient, compassionate, brilliant, driven, silly, courageous, dependable, adventurous, strong, creative, kind, quirky, ambitious, curious, brave. They are many things, but they are not alone.
“We deeply believe Girls are the Future and there is nothing that makes more sense than investing in them, in media that lets them see themselves represented in a way that maybe they haven’t before. Investing in capturing and sharing untold stories of everyday girls that have the potential to be and inspire the next leaders. Content that helps them reflect on the kind of women WE KNOW they can become.” Peña says. “She is the Universe gives girls the power to voice their dreams, to stand in their own stories and start to believe in possibility. They remember they are not alone, hear how others have overcome obstacles, and gain the confidence to create new narratives of what it is to be a girl.”
Peña and her team are producing and publishing these videos to empower girls between 13 and 19 — of all shapes, sizes, colors, languages, and cultural and socio-economic backgrounds — to be seen, heard, and celebrated. So far, they’ve shot 51 interviews with girls in 21 cities and 10 countries, including the United States, the Dominican Republic, Colombia, Peru, Iceland, The UK, The Netherlands, Denmark, Spain and Portugal. Next on the list, Australia, Thailand, Vietnam, South Korea, Japan and India.
